What is Maro?
Maro is a digital platform that helps schools identify and support students who may be struggling with their mental health. Using research-backed screening tools, Maro makes it easy for school staff to conduct standardized wellness surveys, flag students who may need extra support, and connect families to local mental health professionals. Maro’s goal is to help schools take a proactive, data-driven approach to student mental health—before challenges become crises.
What are mental health surveys and why are they important?
Mental health surveys are short, evidence-based questionnaires that help identify students who may be experiencing symptoms of stress, anxiety, depression, or other emotional challenges. These surveys are not diagnostic—they’re an early detection tool. Identifying concerns early allows schools and families to offer the right support at the right time, helping students stay healthy, focused, and engaged in learning.
Who developed the screeners that Maro uses?
Maro uses industry-standard, research-validated screening tools such as the PHQ-9 (for depression) and GAD-7 (for anxiety), which were developed by clinical researchers and are widely used by healthcare professionals around the world. These tools are recommended by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force and trusted by pediatricians, psychologists, and school-based health programs.
Are these surveys mandatory?
No. Participation in mental health surveys through Maro is completely optional. Parents and guardians have full control over whether their student participates, and schools ensure that all screenings comply with local policies and parental consent requirements.
How do I opt my student in or out?
Parents and guardians can opt their student in or out of the screening process through the Maro for Families app or by following the instructions provided by their school. Opting preferences can be updated at any time, giving families complete flexibility and control.
What comes next after you survey my student?
After a student completes the survey, Maro’s system analyzes the results to flag any responses that may suggest a student could benefit from additional support. School staff review those results and, if appropriate, contact the student’s parent or guardian with recommendations for local mental health resources or next steps. Maro does not share results outside the school or make any clinical decisions—those are always handled by qualified professionals.
Will my student be diagnosed?
No. Maro does not provide diagnoses. The surveys are screening tools, not diagnostic evaluations. Their purpose is to help schools identify which students might need a closer look or additional support. Any diagnosis or treatment decisions would come from a licensed healthcare provider outside the school setting.
Are the surveys digital?
Yes. All Maro surveys are fully digital and can be completed securely on school devices. This makes the process efficient, consistent, and easy to manage across large student populations while maintaining strict data privacy standards.
How do I sign up for the Maro for Families app?
You can download the Maro for Families app from the App Store or Google Play. Once downloaded, follow your school’s invite link or enter the code provided by your district to connect your student’s profile. From there, you can manage consent, view updates, and access any referral information securely.
Who are Maro's referral partners?
Maro partners with a network of licensed mental health providers, including local therapists, counselors, and pediatric care organizations. These partnerships are curated based on location, availability, and specialty to ensure families are connected with trusted professionals who can provide the right kind of care.
Is Maro COPPA compliant?
Yes. Maro is fully COPPA (Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act) compliant. We take data privacy and security extremely seriously. All information collected through Maro is encrypted, securely stored, and never sold or shared outside of authorized school personnel and parents. Our systems meet or exceed federal and state-level student data protection standards.
